Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 November 2024 Outline

Jesus died and paid the price for our sinfulness. But there is a difference in what John declares here in v.1 and in 1:8. The Christian who is in the light must not indulge in sinful practices (v.1). He is to aim at perfection (see Matthew 5:48). However, one cannot walk around without his head moving (Yoruba adage). On this side of eternity, we will occasionally stumble. When we do sin, we must not remain in that state. We should get up realizing that Christ is still defending our cause with the Father (vs.1-2).

Identify two tests in vs.3&6 by which we can know that we are in Christ. The first is occasional, to some extent, but not less demanding. The other test is a continuing one, walking as Jesus walked, talking, and doing things the Jesus way! See 1 Corinthians 10:31. That is why mere indifference, not even hatred, to the plight of another person is an indication that we may still be far away from where we think we are spiritually. Love, especially among the brethren, is not optional, but obligatory. See John 13:34,35.

Practice/Word Application
And so? If you have deliberately withdrawn your love for someone, restore it today.

To God be the glory
1 To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son
and give him the glory, great things he has done!

2. O perfect redemption,
The purchase of blood,
To every believer
The promise of God;
The vilest offender
Who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus
A pardon receives.

3. Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son,
but purer and higher and greater will be
our joy and our wonder, when Jesus we see.

Closing Prayer
Dear Lord, help me to keep your light shining, and the glory of your spirit radiating in my heart. May the revelation of your love through me lead many to faith in you.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 18:2 ‐ 3
